A pulse jet bag filter, also called a pulse jet baghouse or pulse jet dust collector, is a self-cleaning dry filtration system. The pulse jet dust collector cleaning system removes particulate matter and dust from the surface of internal filter media with bursts of compressed air. Pulse jet bag filters are the most common type of particulate air pollution control equipment found in workplaces, including factories, plants, warehouses, and other industrial or commercial environments, to meet workplace air quality safety requirements and comply with EPA requirements for emissions.
The pulse jet dust collector contains no moving parts, thus offering reliable continuous operations along with superior filtration efficiency, engineered to effectively collect and remove potentially harmful particulate matter gas fumes that would otherwise enter the work environment or atmosphere. The popularity of the pulse jet style of dust collector is due to its ease of operation, low energy usage, and minimal maintenance requirements.
Pulse jet bag filters get their name from the short bursts or “pulses” of compressed air used to clean them. In the pulse jet system, the dust is collected on the external surface of the bag/filter, where it commonly forms into a cake of dust. Either on a timed basis or based on pressure drop when the dust cake is at an appropriate thickness, a controller activates a sequential pulse of compressed air into the interior of the filter bags, one (or more) row(s) at a time, knocking the dust and dust cake free of the filter to fall via gravity into the hopper for removal. The mechanics of the compressed air pulse and associated induced draft of additional air through a venturi nozzle create a shock wave and ripple effect on filter bags which enhances the mechanical force of the initial blast of compressed air itself to dislodge the dust particles off the fabric.

Cyclones—also referred to as cyclone dust collectors—are air pollution control devices which, similarly to air filters, separate dry particulate matter from gaseous emissions. However, rather than employing filtration media, cyclones utilize centrifugal force to collect and remove particulates. As gas streams enter a cyclone, they flow along a spiral path within the cylindrical chamber. This swirling motion forces large particulates against the chamber wall, which slows their inertia, causing them to drop into the collection hopper below for further processing and disposal. The cleaned gas streams continue upward and out of the cyclone.
While cyclones are typically employed for filtration applications of particulates ≥50 μm in diameter, some models are capable of greater than 90% efficiency for particulates ≥10–20 μm in diameter. Efficiency increases or decreases depending on larger or smaller particulate diameters, respectively. Typically, additional filtration devices used to control air pollution, such as baghouses, are employed following cyclones in an air pollution control system to remove the smaller particulates not previously separated and collected from the gas stream by the cyclones.
